C/N ratio-induced structural shift of bacterial communities inside lab-scale aquaculture biofilters ArchiMer
Michaud, Luigi; Lo Giudice, Angelina; Interdonato, Filippo; Triplet, Sebastien; Ying, Luo; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
In Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) various chemical compounds (mainly nitrates and organic carbon) accumulate in the rearing water. These chemical substrata regulate the ecophysiology of the bacterial communities of the biofilter and have an impact on its nitrification efficiency and reliability. In the present study chemical and microbiological parameters in static mineral bed (SBB) and moving plastic bed (MBB) biological filters were monitored at increasing C/N ratios ranging from 0 (pure nitrification) to 4 (combined nitrification and organic carbon removal), with the aim to investigate the shift of the bacterial community structure and major taxa relative abundances. Results suggest that the MBB are less subjected to the nitrification...

Harmelin Vivien, M; Loizeau, Veronique; Mellon-duval, Capucine; Beker, B; Arlhac, D; Bodiguel, Xavier; Ferraton, Franck; Hermand, R; Philippon, Xavier; Salen Picard, C.
Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of particulate organic matter (POM) in surface water and 63-200 mu m-sized microphytoplankton collected at the fluorescence maximum were studied in four sites in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean), a marine area influenced by the Rhone River inputs, in May and November 2004. Some environmental (temperature, salinity) and biological (POM, Chlorophyll a and phaeopigments contents, phytoplankton biomass and composition) parameters were also analysed. Significantly different C and N isotopic signatures between surface water POM and microphytoplankton were recorded in all sites and seasons. Surface water POM presented systematically lower delta C-13 (similar to 4.2 parts per thousand) and higher delta N-15 (similar to...

Growth of the Ectomycorrhizal Fungus Pisolithus Microcarpus in different nutritional conditions BJM
Rossi,Márcio José; Oliveira,Vetúria L..
The most important plant species employed in reforestation programs depend on ectomycorrhizal fungi for their establishment and growth. The exploitation of this symbiosis to improve forest productivity requires fungal inoculants in a large scale level. To develop such a technology it is necessary to define the optimal composition of the culture medium for each fungus. With these objectives in mind, the effect of the composition of the culture medium on biomass production of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus microcarpus (isolate UFSC-Pt116) was studied. The original composition of two culture media, already employed for cultivation of ectomycorrhizal fungi, was submitted to several variations with the C/N ratio as the main variable. A variation of the...

Nitrogen efficiency in oat yield through the biopolymer hydrogel AGRIAMBI
Scremin,Osmar B.; Silva,José A. G. da; Mamann,Ângela T. W. de; Mantai,Rubia D.; Brezolin,Ana P.; Marolli,Anderson.
ABSTRACT The retainers of water in the soil can favor nitrogen (N) use efficiency in oat yield. The aim of the study was to determine if the conditions of use of the biopolymer hydrogel increase the fertilizer-N use efficiency in oat yield in succession systems of high and low residual-N release. In each succession system (soybean/oat, corn/oat), two experiments were conducted in 2014 and 2015, one to quantify biomass yield and the other to estimate grain yield and lodging. The design was randomized blocks with four replicates in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme for hydrogel doses (0, 30, 60 and 120 kg ha-1), added in the furrow with the seed, and N fertilizer doses (0, 30, 60 and 120 kg ha-1) applied in the fourth-expanded-leaf stage. The use of hydrogel...

Maia,Patrícia Ribeiro; Fernandes,Antonio Rodrigues; Melo,Vânia Silva; Santos,Elaine Rodrigues; Silva,Gisele Barata da.
The microbial biomass and activity are biological indicators sensitive to environmental changes caused by agricultural use and can provide important information for the planning of adequate land use. The objective of this research was to evaluate the nutrient recycling, persistence, and biological attributes of sorghum straw in Oxisol as a function of soil management systems. The experiment was carried out at the Federal Rural University of Amazonia in randomized block design with 3 x 2 factorial and four replicates. Three sorghum hybrids and two soil management systems were the factors used to assess straw decomposition. In order to evaluate the biological attributes, a 2 x 2 factorial experiment with four replicates was carried out using two soil...

Production, carbon and nitrogen in stover fractions of corn ( Zea mays L.) in response to cultivar development Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Barbosa,Julierme Zimmer; Ferreira,Carla Fernanda; Santos,Nicolas Zendonadi dos; Motta,Antonio Carlos Vargas; Prior,Stephen; Gabardo,Juarez.
ABSTRACT Changes in quantity and quality of corn crop stover can have a large impact on soil conservation and soil carbon (C) sequestration over large areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in production, concentration and amount of C and nitrogen (N) in corn stover fractions due to cultivar development. Two field experiments were conducted in the city of Rolândia (Paraná State, Brazil) using ten cultivars representing five technological levels: single cross hybrids, double or triple hybrids, commercial varieties, and creole cultivars. Plant heights and stalk, leaf, cob, husk and tassel weights were determined at final harvest. Elemental C and N analyses were performed in triplicate for each stover fraction. In general, the creole cultivars...

Spatial distribution of organic matter in the surface sediments of Ubatuba Bay (Southeastern - Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
BURONE,LETICIA; MUNIZ,PABLO; PIRES-VANIN,ANA MARIA S.; RODRIGUES,MARCELO.
Analyses of organic matter content, organic carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and granulometric variables were performed on 101 surface sediment samples from Ubatuba Bay in order to investigate the spatial distribution of organic matter, its origin and the relationships among its components. The samples were obtained with a manual corer, from water depths between 1 and 15m during 5 cruises of the R/V "Veliger II'', two months apart. Pearson correlation, regression and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) statistical methods were used to analyze the data. Strong correlations between organic matter and fine sediment fractions were obtained. The PCA revealed at least two main sample groups that reflect the different environmental conditions prevalent in the bay. There...

Studies on production of single cell protein by Aspergillus niger in solid state fermentation of rice bran BABT
Anupama,; Ravindra,Pogaku.
An attempt was made to apply the solid state fermentation (SSF) for the production of single cell protein (SCP) using oil free rice bran waste as substrate. A local isolate of Aspergillus niger, was used as protein source for the studies. Total proteins were extracted to estimate the mycelial biomass from the moldy bran. Carbonate-bicarbonate extraction buffer and a pH 10 was found to be most efficient among the buffers used for the extraction of the proteins from the organism. The effect of supplementation by various sources of nitrogen and mineral solution on the final biomass yield was compared. The influence of C/N ratio on the protein yield was also studied. Sodium nitrate at C/N ratio of 1.387 was found to be an effective nitrogen-supplementing...
